Pegasus benefits hospitals and patients alike.
Established in 1996, Pegasus Emergency Group is a successful and rapidly-growing physician-owned and -operated company specializing in the management and improvement of emergency departments.
We start with clearly defined goals:
- To provide excellent care and customer service
- To ensure efficiency and profitability
- To create a sense of ownership among staff
- To decrease wait times and through times for patients
- To ensure that admissions through the ED are appropriate
- To properly utilize hospital resources and personnel
- To have superb relationships with EMS
- To be recognized as the best emergency department in the region
How do we achieve these goals? With a proven model unlike any other.
Our model starts with better physicians.
We employ emergency medicine specialists, rather than primary care physicians. Why? When patients enter an emergency room, they have high expectations of their physicians and specialists are best at addressing those expectations. Emergency physicians utilize tests and consult other specialists more appropriately. They reduce wait times, make fewer medical errors, and enhance resource utilization.
Beyond skill, Pegasus Emergency Group recruits leaders and providers who maintain the highest medical standards, demonstrate empathy for patients, and develop effective rapport with administration and staff.
Our model rewards employees and creates ownership.
In order to recruit this level of provider, Pegasus Emergency Group pays higher salaries than competitors and offers financial incentives for quality measures and customer satisfaction success. We have an profit-sharing track with transparent parameters for promotion, since we want our physicians to act like owners, not shift workers. In fact, all of the practices become fully democratic, locally managed organizations within in a few years, with every partner sharing equally in decision-making and profit-sharing.
Our approach to recruitment and management leads to extraordinary physician satisfaction. Pegasus Emergency Group has never lost a contract nor had a physician leave because of dissatisfaction with our management or business practices.
Our model includes careful, continuous monitoring.
Like people, emergency departments have vitals that reveal the quality of their health. In EDs, these vitals are wait times, hospital admission rates, quantities and types of tests, patient satisfaction and outcomes, and staff and physician turnover. In all, we assess more than 40 key metrics. We monitor these vitals, check them against high-performance EDs, and make changes in process, protocol and staff to address symptoms of poor performance.
These factors separate us from other emergency department management companies. They also enable our departments to perform at the very highest levels for quality and profitability.
