St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Department
St. Francis Medical Center is proud to be the largest hospital in Northeast Louisiana, as well as the largest private employer in Ouachita Parish. The hospital has been providing healthcare services to the region for over 90 years. Its history began at the turn of the century when Father Ludovic Enaut, a retired priest in Monroe, promised to provide the money to build a sanitarium in Monroe if Sisters could be found who would give everything to the mission and ask for nothing in return. A search was conducted throughout Europe, and on November 14, 1911, six Sisters from the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Congregation arrived in Monroe from France to begin a healthcare ministry that would touch the lives of thousands annually. St. Francis Sanitarium and Training School for Nurses, the first hospital and nursing school in northeastern Louisiana, opened its doors on July 22, 1913. Today, St. Francis Medical Center is proud to offer cutting-edge technology and superior service to the residents of our region.
St. Francis Medical Center offers 24/7 emergency services at the Kitty DeGree Emergency Center. The new Emergency Center is named after Ms. Kitty DeGree, a local philanthropist, who has been a long-time friend and contributor to St. Francis Medical Center.
St. Francis Medical Center teamed up with Pegasus Emergency Group to provide top quality emergency medicine services. Completion of the Fast Track area and renovation of the current Emergency Department were completed in 2012. The new Emergency Center includes trauma rooms, service line specific rooms, and a Fast Track area for taking care of patients in non-emergent situations. Other enhancements include state of the art monitoring equipment, an in-house CT scanner as well as the newest technology in digital radiology. The new design offers two entrances, one public walk-in entrance and one designed for ambulances with the ultimate outcome of expedited patient flow, triage capability and enhanced patient experience. The downtown Emergency Department at St. Francis averages approximately 3,400 patient visits monthly.
Emergency services are also provided at the North campus of St. Francis Medical Center, and those services will remain in place after construction of the downtown facility is complete.
